A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to save a tooth, stop ongoing tissue bleeding, or alleviate severe pain. Common dental emergencies include:
Time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva. See us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Persistent, severe tooth pain may indicate an infection or abscess. Rinse with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relievers. Contact us immediately as infections can spread and become serious.
Save any pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact us immediately for an evaluation.
Keep the crown safe if you have it. You can temporarily reattach it with denture adhesive or toothpaste. Avoid chewing on that side and contact us to schedule a repair.
A dental abscess is a serious infection that can be life-threatening if left untreated. Symptoms include severe toothache, fever, swelling, and a pimple-like bump on your gum. Seek immediate care.
